How to Get Cited by ChatGPT and AI Overviews: A Performance Marketer’s Guide
For an increasing number of searches, being cited inside an AI answer matters more than ranking on page one. Here is what AI systems actually pull from, and how to structure content that gets picked up.
Why being cited matters more than ranking for some searches now
For a growing percentage of UAE search queries, the user never scrolls past the AI-generated answer. Google AI Overviews sits at the top of the results page. ChatGPT and Perplexity answer questions without showing a results page at all. If your business is not mentioned inside the AI’s answer, you are invisible to that user — regardless of where you rank in the traditional results that appear below.
We started tracking this shift seriously in Q1 2026. For informational queries — "what is the best CRM for real estate agents in Dubai" or "how does corporate tax work in the UAE" — we saw organic click-through rates from Google drop 15-25% on queries where an AI Overview was displayed. The user got their answer from the AI summary and did not click through to any website. For how to get cited by ChatGPT AI Overviews, this means the AI answer is the new page one — and being inside it is the new ranking.
This does not mean SEO is dead. For transactional queries — "aesthetic clinic Dubai Marina booking" or "buy iPhone 16 Dubai" — users still click through to websites because they need to take an action the AI cannot perform for them. But for research queries, recommendation queries, and "who are the best X in Dubai" queries, the AI answer is increasingly the destination. If your business is not cited, you lose the inquiry before the user ever reaches a results page.
What AI systems actually pull from when generating answers
AI systems do not browse the internet the way a human does. When ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, or Perplexity generates an answer, they are synthesizing information from a set of sources that includes: the web index they have access to (Google’s index for AI Overviews, Bing’s index for ChatGPT, a real-time web search for Perplexity), structured data like schema markup and business listings, review platforms like Google reviews and Trustpilot, directories and aggregators like Clutch, G2, and industry-specific directories, and discussion forums like Reddit and Quora.
The key insight is that AI systems weight sources differently than Google’s ranking algorithm does. Google rewards backlinks, domain authority, and page relevance. AI systems reward factual clarity, source diversity, and consistency. If your business is described consistently across 8-10 independent sources — your website, Google Business Profile, two directories, a review platform, and a forum discussion — the AI has high confidence in including you. If your business is described only on your own website, the AI has low confidence — even if your website ranks #1 on Google.
We tested this directly. We asked three AI systems "what are the best performance marketing agencies in Dubai?" and tracked which agencies were cited. The agencies cited most consistently were the ones with the broadest presence across independent sources — not the ones with the highest Google rankings. One agency that ranked #1 on Google for "performance marketing agency Dubai" was not cited by any of the three AI systems, because its web presence was limited to its own well-optimized website. Another agency with weaker SEO but strong presence on Clutch, Google reviews, and two industry articles was cited by all three.
Content structure that gets picked up (and what doesn’t)
AI systems extract information from content, not from marketing copy. This is the fundamental difference between SEO content and GEO content. SEO content targets a keyword and builds relevance around it. GEO content provides clear, extractable facts that an AI can pull and include in a synthesized answer.
Content that gets picked up: factual statements ("Desiro Growth is a performance marketing agency based in Dubai with offices in five countries"), structured comparisons (tables, lists, and comparison formats that AI can parse easily), definitive answers to specific questions (content that directly answers "who," "what," "where," and "how much" questions), and data and statistics (specific numbers that AI can cite as evidence). A page that says "we help businesses grow" gives the AI nothing. A page that says "we have run 200+ campaigns across 10 industries in the UAE since 2015" gives the AI a citable fact.
Content that does not get picked up: vague brand language ("exceptional results," "forward-thinking solutions"), long narrative paragraphs that bury the key information (AI extracts from the surface, not from deep reading), content that requires interpretation (metaphors, brand stories, emotional appeals — AI wants facts, not feelings), and content that is only on your own website (AI prioritizes independent sources). If your "about us" page is the only place your business is described, you are invisible to AI synthesis — no matter how well-written that page is.
How this changes what "SEO content" should look like going forward
The implication for content strategy is significant. The blog posts and landing pages that most UAE businesses publish — optimized for keywords, written for Google’s algorithm, structured around search intent — will continue to matter for traditional search. But a parallel content discipline is emerging: writing for AI extraction. This means creating content that is structured, factual, and distributed across the sources AI systems read.
The practical shift: every piece of content you publish should include extractable facts. Instead of a blog post that says "our agency delivers great results," include the specific facts an AI could pull: "Desiro Growth has managed AED 12M+ in ad spend across Google, Meta, and TikTok for UAE clients in real estate, healthcare, and ecommerce." Instead of a landing page that says "we are the leading agency in Dubai," include the data: "founded in 2015, 5 offices, 200+ campaigns, 10 industries served." These are the sentences AI systems extract and include in generated answers.
How to get cited by ChatGPT AI Overviews is not a separate discipline from SEO — it is an extension of it. The content you are already creating for search can be restructured to include the factual, extractable statements that AI systems favor. The presence you are already building on Google Business Profile and review platforms is the same presence AI systems draw from. The shift is in awareness: knowing that your audience is increasingly getting answers from AI, and shaping your content and presence to be part of those answers — not just part of a ranked list that fewer people scroll to.
